DRF AIR RESCUE – MANNHEIM STATION
AIR RESCUE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL
DRF Luftrettung has had its own base in Mannheim since 1986. At that time, operations began provisionally with an Ecureuil AS 350 helicopter, also known as the "Squirrel." This was replaced by a more powerful BK 117 in 1992. Today, a modern H145 helicopter with a five-blade rotor is stationed in Mannheim – ideally suited for demanding rescue missions.Christoph 53 was originally used primarily for the fast and gentle intensive care transport of patients between hospitals. Since 2005, the Mannheim rescue helicopter has been directly connected to the Rhine-Neckar rescue control center and is also called out in emergencies – whenever it can get the emergency doctor to the scene of the accident or injury the fastest.
The helicopter stationed in Mannheim is a so-called dual-use rescue helicopter: it is used both for primary missions, such as after traffic accidents or in acute medical emergencies such as heart attacks, and for secondary transports. These include specialized intensive care transfers, incubator transports for premature babies, and other medically complex tasks.
The Christoph 53 crew consists of a total of 19 highly qualified specialists:
- 4 pilots from DRF Luftrettung
- 11 emergency physicians from the University Hospitals of Mannheim and Heidelberg
- 4 emergency paramedics from DRF Luftrettung
A special feature of the location: in 2019, the Mannheim crew became the first team in Germany to be fully trained in the use of advanced invasive emergency techniques. Since then, patients with severe blood loss can be treated with blood and plasma reserves while still on board the helicopter – a life-saving measure that can be crucial even before arrival at the hospital.
Christoph 53 stands for modern air rescue, the highest medical standards, and a strong team that is on duty every day to save lives.
